[PODCAST TRANSCRIPT]
Hello everyone, I’m Savannah Alalia and welcome to the latest episode of High Functioning Human, the podcast where you, as always, get to connect to yourself as a high functioning human.
So imagine someone asking you this, what’s getting in the way of you achieving your potential? It’s lucky you don’t need to imagine it because I’ve just asked you what is getting in the way of you achieving your potential? What would your answer be? How would you answer me? You can tell me in the comments below. But a quote from one of my favourite books, Mark Manson’s ‘The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k’, really hits it home: “Who you are is defined by what you’re willing to struggle for.” This statement sets the stage for our discussion on identifying and overcoming the barriers that you might unknowingly be setting up for yourself.
So firstly, let’s examine what common barriers might be preventing you from revealing or reaching your full potential. In my work with people who have transformed their lives in incredible ways, though the journey itself takes time, the pivotal moments always come when they start to truly believe that they deserve and can achieve their potential. Albert Einstein famously said, “Everything is energy and that’s all that there is. Match the frequency of the reality that you want, and you cannot help but get that reality.” This is about aligning your energy with the vision of your potential and breaking down the mental barriers that you might have that are standing in your way.
So now, let’s reflect on that. How does your internal narrative or self-doubt contribute to these barriers? The stories that you might tell yourself, do they play a significant role in shaping your reality? I’d say that they do. Picture your journey to potential, or your potential, as a river. That river is meant to be flowing freely.
Now imagine your self-doubts and your negative thoughts. Imagine them as debris going into that river. Now starting it might be small pebbles. Start off with little things that chatter away in the background, but those small pebbles potentially grow into boulders over time, and that blocks the flow in your river in that flow.
So, recall Einstein’s insight about energy shaping reality. If these mental blocks remain, then they could turn into tangible obstacles in your life, and your energy river could eventually end up drying up completely. So what if you began to clear this clutter and allowed that river of yours, that potential, to flow smoothly? I want you to take a moment and think about the transformative impact of reshaping your mindset.
Would you be willing to take out, for example, those boulders and those pebbles and those thoughts to give yourself and your life a flow?
I invite you to share in the comments below how you feel about this particular thing. Now, let’s focus on a practical aspect of this – how can you effectively show up for yourself and transform those mental habits, those rocks, those boulders? Research suggests that it takes an average of 66 days to form a habit, and that includes the mental habits that you have. If you want to create different habits that are helping you remove the pebbles and the boulders from that flow, like positive affirmations or constructive thought patterns.
For those to become ingrained, you’re looking at 66 days at least, and it’s vital that you make a conscious effort to then show up for yourself. I’d say a great way to start is to start small, and you could try my [WRK] Weekend Retreat Kit. This kit is designed as a concise three-day program to offer you actionable steps that are easy to integrate into your daily life. It’s an excellent opportunity to experience how different you can feel when you dedicate just a few days to focusing on yourself. These small steps, when practised consistently, can significantly transform your mindset and pave the way towards connecting to your full potential.
Every substantial change starts with a single action, and the [WRK] Weekend Retreat Kit can be that first pivotal step for you, if you decide to join me on that journey. And if three days feel like too much to start with, I’ve got a 20-minute meditation that can be completely transformative just by itself. You’ll be surprised.
So, to wrap up, overcoming the barriers that you’ve set for yourself is a key part of unlocking your potential. Your identity is shaped by the challenges that you face and then overcome. I would like to invite you to start with small actions and to build up confidence and belief in yourself.
Remember, trust your instincts. Follow your intuition. Because the world needs your voice and the magic it brings to us all.

Hi team Savannah.
Over the last few years I have had help changing negative thought patterns through listening to posituve affirmations. I continue to use them as although my life is so much richer and more meaningful, the childhood trauma that led me then, to use any means available to protect myself, is still part of me. The affirmations helped me to let go of negativity and accept that healing does not always mean an absence of pain. It still takes immense courage for me to get into my handmade boat, as my world dissolves around me and cut a path downstream.
One thing has changed though. How others see me. They say that I am helpful in my tolerance andpatience and that I am approachable and easy to talk with. In the past my negativity and fear inspired mistrust in others. So I continue to imagine, affirm and accept the very good things the universe keeps giving to me.
Lastly, I accept that it’s really ok to not give a fuck about other peoples problems that they want me to take on. That is their river.
And I am entitled to journey on mine, steadily paddling towards my goals and my world ahead.
