FEEL AND LET GO

What do an airplane wing and a skyscraper have in common? They both know how to process massive amounts of energy and let it move through rather than just getting stuck. 

So what about you? 

Do you sail through emotional turbulence and out the other side, or do you get stuck in it? Or do you avoid feeling at all, staying in what I call the numb area, where you’re scared that by letting things affect you, you’ll crumble? Sound familiar? What if you had the confidence to move beyond numbness because you trust in your ability to let go of emotions rather than being overwhelmed by them? Today we’re exploring how to break free from the stuck or freeze state and what that means for your fascia. 

I’m Savannah Alalia and welcome to the latest episode of High Functioning Human podcast where you connect to yourself as a high functioning human. 

Okay, let’s revisit the idea of numbness and what it really means. I’ve spoken about it in previous podcasts like Uncomfortably Numb. And I often say “numb is your enemy and pain is your friend.” Numb can affect you in many ways and it might feel like you’re just going through the motions of life without truly experiencing it, avoiding connection or genuine feeling. This numbness is often the result of prolonged stress or trauma leading to a freeze-stuck state where emotions and sensations are suppressed in your body.

Stopping your feelings and or being closed and numb is a kind of end result. When things get so bad that you no longer feel them, you shut down completely. So what can you do about it? Well, recognizing this disconnect is the starting point really to a long journey out of freeze and stuck and back to a meaningful connection between your body and your life. 

And the first step on that journey, well, the first step is finding the confidence to let yourself feel again. British philosopher Aldous Huxley said, “feel lightly even though you’re feeling deeply.” And I think that’s a really beautiful way of connecting to this. 

When you move into actually feeling again, you’re going to start to feel pain, pleasure and other sensations as your body begins to talk to you once it’s out of its frozen state and once it’s out of that place of numbness. This is great. This is what you’re looking for here. This is how you’re going to learn to be a High Functioning Human by making those connections, hearing your body speaking, feeling those sensations as you release your fascia. As you process what’s been stuck in you for however long. That is the goal. 

Now, as you start to feel again, those feelings can become very present in your body. Whether it’s emotional or physical feelings, the key here is to avoid getting stuck in them, to be able to feel deeply yet lightly, and then let them go. You want this lightness, this openness, so that whatever arises for you in your life, you can flow, flow through freely rather than getting entangled in what you’re already processing. Otherwise, it can become really hard. If you’re stuck in a place of heavy feeling and then something else shows up out of the blue, this can get so jarring that you can become reluctant to deal with what’s going on inside, and resisting or avoiding feeling will send you back into that freeze-stuck state. 

So instead you have to keep letting the feelings arise, whatever they are, feel them, acknowledge them, and then let them go to create more capacity for yourself. It’s like the airplane feeling the air and letting it move past the wing. It’s a process of continual movement and this is where your fascial health can play a huge part.
